Just like your car, parts of your air conditioning system need a little love from time to time. Take, for example, the condensate drain. Your air conditioner’s condensate drain line removes the condensation that forms as your AC systems remove excess moisture from the air. When the condensate drain is working properly, it should expel the excess moisture outside.
In Florida, our air conditioning systems have two jobs: producing cool air and dehumidifying it. As your AC system dehumidifies the air, condensation should be directed outdoors via the condensate drain. This means that whenever your air conditioning system is in use, there should be water dripping from the condensate drain.
On occasion, this drain line will clog. If your AC drain line clogs, it’s important to clear the blockage right away. A clogged condensate drain can cause bacteria and algae growth, which can cause the drain pan to overflow and damage your home.

Fortunately, cleaning your condensate drain is simple and can be done using a common household cleaning product. All you will need is a few minutes of your time and some regular distilled vinegar.
Cleaning Your AC Drain Line Using Vinegar in 3 Steps
Cleaning the condensate drain is relatively simple, and even better, you can clean your condensate drain with a product you probably already have at home: vinegar. Learn how to clean your AC drain line using vinegar below.
Step 1. Locate the Drain Line
The condensate drain is a PVC pipe typically located outside near the compressor, attached to a wall of your home. If you find the drain and detect the absence of a slow drip, the drain likely needs to be cleaned.
Step 2. Pour in the Vinegar
Remove the drain line plug and pour in ¼ cup of distilled vinegar. Vinegar kills algae, but keep in mind that it may take a few hours to remove the blockage if it is severe.
Step 3. Repeat Monthly
Repeating this cleaning routine monthly, or as needed, will help keep your condensate drain clean and in good working condition.
