1. Maintain Adequate Ventilation
One of the biggest culprits of high humidity is stagnant air. Cooking, washing, and bathing all release humidity into an environment, and poor ventilation allows it to stay. Ensure that vent fans in kitchens and bathrooms are working properly, or install them if they are not present.
2. Use Naturally Absorbent Materials to Lower Humidity
Certain natural materials, such as Japanese white charcoal, can help absorb moisture and odors from the air. To keep poorly ventilated areas (especially closets) from feeling damp and smelling musty, place baskets of charcoal inside. When the charcoal seems to stop working effectively, simply place it in the sunlight for a few hours to dry for re-use. Once it is no longer usable, it can be composted.
3. Keep Basements Dry
Damp and leaky basements frequently contribute to an excess of indoor humidity. Keep gutters from overflowing, avoid over watering outdoor plants adjacent to the home, and ensure that downspouts extend at least three to five feet from the foundation. Splash blocks under your gutter spouts can help absorb water and direct the water further from the foundation.
4. Keep HVAC Systems Maintained
Make sure the condensate drain lines on your HVAC system stay clear and unclogged. Look out for pools of water collecting under your unit, condensation forming on ducts, “dirty sock” smells and other signs that the system may need some maintenance, cleaning, or better insulation.
