The holidays are a popular time to travel and spend quality time with family and friends. Part of your travel planning should include preparing your home for the time you’ll spend away. Before heading out on your much deserved vacation, use the following tips to save energy and protect your home.
Home Safety Tips
You want your house to look as if you are still at home. If you plan to be away for an extended period, stop your mail and deliveries or have a trusted friend collect these items. Disable your automatic garage door opener. Check that all doors, including the one leading to the garage, are locked and install timers to turn lights on and off at various times of the day. Keep blinds and drapes closed as this prevents passersby from looking inside your home and maintains indoor air temperature.
Lower Water Heater Temperature Settings
Hot water heaters consume a lot of energy. Government studies indicate they can account for almost 20 percent of a monthly residential utility bill. Before you leave, lower the temperature setting on your water heater. If you don’t already have a water heater timer, you might want to install one. Depending on how long you will be away, consider shutting off the valves supplying the washing machine, especially if it is located on the second floor, to prevent flooding from a broken water line.
Reset the Thermostat
In Florida, turning your air conditioning off for an extended might cause humidity problems when you return. Instead, reset your thermostat to a higher temperature, recommended at four degrees off your normal setting. Remember to adjust the temperature accordingly if you will be leaving your pets at home. A programmable thermostat may enable you to lower the temperature while you are away and raise it just before you return home. You may also consider upgrading to a smart thermostat that lets you control the temperature inside your home using a computer or smartphone app.
Schedule an AC Maintenance Visit from Blair’s Air
For added peace of mind while traveling, have your heating and cooling system serviced before you leave. A system tune-up will help identify any issues and prevent a large repair expense in the future. Ensuring that your heating and cooling system is operating at optimum efficiency reduces the chance that a problem will arise while you are away.
