Now that it’s the new year, it’s time for new SEER ratings. The DOE (Department of Energy) has released stricter guidelines for AC units and heat pumps, and we want our clients to stay informed. Here is everything you need to know about the updated SEER ratings and how they affect you.
What Are SEER Ratings?
SEER Ratings for 2023
For 2023, the DOE, or Department of Energy, has increased SEER ratings in every region across the United States. For us in the Southeast region, that means the minimum SEER ratings in Florida have increased from 14 to 15. For a more specific SEER rating, find how many Btu per hour your AC uses. This measurement tells you the amount of heat your AC removes per hour. You can determine your new minimum SEER rating from this measurement:
If your split AC system is
Less than 45k Btu/hr = a new minimum SEER rating of 15
More or Equal to 45k Btu/hr = a new minimum SEER rating of 14.5
New SEER2 Ratings for 2023
Along with increased SEER ratings, these new guidelines introduce an updated rating system. In addition to SEER ratings, the DOE is now introducing SEER2 ratings. These ratings will eventually become the new standard for testing AC efficiency as the SEER ratings will eventually be discontinued. Until then, both are acceptable for your AC.
If you want to know your AC’s SEER2 rating, you can figure it out the same way you can find the SEER rating. Your SEER2 rating will be based on your AC system’s Btu/h. If your split AC system is
What’s the Difference Between SEER and SEER2?
While the SEER2 ratings serve the same purpose as original SEER ratings, the DOE have dictated that they be tested through a different procedure and calculated differently. Before 2023, the SEER ratings were tested through the M test procedure. Now in 2023, the new SEER2 ratings are tested through the M1 testing procedure. The M1 test contains more rigorous guidelines that are more accurate and efficient than the M test, which is why the SEER2 is lower compared to the SEER ratings. As time goes on, this stricter test will replace the M test procedure.
These new guidelines mean that AC units will become more efficient and more intuitive to your household’s cooling needs. To adapt to these changes, the cost of new HVAC units might rise, but in the long run, it will save energy costs and consumption. This is not only good news for your home and your wallet but the environment too.
