“HVAC” is a common acronym used in the heating and cooling industry. The acronym stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, which are three functions that are typically combined into one system in most modern homes and buildings. Learn more about HVAC systems below.

3 Different Types of Air Conditioning Systems

An HVAC system works to control the temperature and humidity inside of your home. But not all HVAC systems are created equal. There are many different types of HVAC systems on the market, each offering comfort in different ways. Depending on the layout of your home, as well as your needs and lifestyle, certain types of HVAC systems may benefit you more than others. Some of the most common HVAC systems are:

1. Central Air Conditioning

Split air conditioning systems, also known as central air conditioners, get their name because they are split between the inside and outside of a home. These systems have an outdoor unit with a condenser and compressor and an indoor unit that contains a fan and an evaporator coil. These systems remove warm air and cycle it back as cool air via an intricate systems or supply and return ductwork.

2. Mini-Split/Ductless Unit

Unlike central air conditioners, mini-split/ductless systems don’t rely on ductwork to cool a home or building. Rather, these systems are designed to heat or cool an individual room, zone, or addition to your home.

3. Heat Pump

Contrary to its name, heat pumps (when partnered with air handlers) provide excellent heating and cooling. Heat pumps work to transport heat, which means the device also works to extract warm air from your home during the summer. When coupled with an air handler, this process can switch during the winter to provide complete comfort year round.
